It is unthinkable to construct a representative building in Benidorm that does not reflect its distinctive image. The city that has embraced high-rise buildings deserves a new, emblematic mixed-use tower.
Sería impensable construir un edificio representativo en Benidorm fuera de su imagen propia y característica. La ciudad que ha defendido el edificio en altura se merece una nueva torre de usos híbridos, emblemática.
The program the brief requested is not balanced among all its parts. The theater-auditorium takes up most of the space, while the museum and library can be overlooked because of their small dimensions, remnants of the giant auditorium. It would therefore be ridiculous for us to imitate a small city with blocks; a city that does not exist in Benidorm.
El programa pedido no está equilibrado entre todos sus componentes. El teatro-auditorio acapara la mayor parte de la superficie, mientras que el museo y la biblioteca corren el riesgo de aparecer en la subdivisión, como pequeñas piezas, rémoras del gigante del que sobreviven. Sería ridículo, por tanto, que imitáramos una pequeña ciudad con los bloques dentro de la parcela; ciudad que, por otra parte, no existe en Benidorm.
A skyscraper. The project requires a skyscraper in which these small parts of the program become essential to increasing the height. Without them, the complex would be a conference and music center, like thousands of others, or at least one in every large city. The small parts become the arms that rise the building to the sky.
Un rascacielos. Se impone un rascacielos, donde esas pequeñas partes de programa se conviertan en imprescindibles para aumentar la altura. Sin ellas, el complejo sería un centro de congresos y de la música, como hay miles, o al menos uno en cada gran ciudad. Ellas serán los brazos que se alzan al cielo.
The auditorium floats above a covered street. It is the first sign that the architecture does not have weight. Three towers rise above its large volume. The lowest is the stage comb, which is not high enough to be seen from all points. The second tower to rise is the dance and music conservatory, located near the stage and taking advantage of those rehearsal rooms that become multipurpose spaces. Finally, the tallest tower houses the conference rooms, museum, and library.
El auditorio flota sobre una calle cubierta. Es la primera señal de que la arquitectura no pesa. Sobre su amplio volumen se levantan tres torres. La más baja es el peine del escenario, que aquí no es lo suficientemente alto como para verse desde todos los puntos. La segunda torre que crece es el conservatorio de danza y música, situado cerca del escenario y aprovechándose de esas salas de ensayos que se convierten en lugares comodín. Por último, la más alta reúne las salas de conferencias, el museo y la biblioteca.
A skyscraper is a section. We have located the lobbies for the seemingly contradictory uses at various strategic points. We have superimposed floors of varying heights. We built a section according to typological rather than programmatic criteria. This will allow any future modifications to the program not affect circulation and common spaces. On the other hand, using a skyscraper structure is equivalent to describing an abstract space that is not initially qualified. The structural definition of the spaces is more important than their precise form.
Un rascacielos es un problema de sección. Hemos ubicado en diversos y estratégicos puntos los vestíbulos de los aparentemente contradictorios usos. Hemos superpuesto plantas con diversas y variadas alturas. Construimos una sección según criterios tipológicos antes que programáticos. Ello permitirá que cualquier futura modificación del programa no afecte a las circulaciones ni a los espacios comunes. Por otro lado, utilizar una estructura de rascacielos equivale a hablar de un espacio abstracto, no cualificado inicialmente. Es más importante la definición estructural de los lugares que la forma precisa que estos tengan.
However, the building should not behave like a rigid volume, inactive to light and time. We are going to give it a skin that is both sensitive and protective. We will cover the entire tower with a metal fabric of different patterns and colors. A fabric of intertwined stainless steel wires whose undulations create oscillating effects and reflections. Time is deposited among its knots. The fabric juxtaposes the colored reflections of the surroundings with the transparency of what is happening behind it. Now the square is once again a space that fits the urban morphology of Benidorm. Most of the surface area has been freed up for a public pedestrian space, which, in the shadow of the complex’s reflections, allows any activity to take place effortlessly. Perhaps most importantly, the scale of the skyscraper does not detract from the city, but rather imposes itself on it as an even greater challenge. Double or nothing.
Sin embargo, el edificio no debe comportarse como un volumen rígido, inerte a la luz y al tiempo. Vamos a dotarlo de una piel sensible y protectora a la vez. Cubriremos toda la torre con una tela metálica de distintos trazados y colores. Un tejido de alambras de acero inoxidable entrecruzadas cuyas ondulaciones confieren efectos y reflejos oscilantes. Entre sus nudos se deposita el tiempo. El tejido yuxtapone los reflejos de colores del entorno a la transparencia de lo que ocurre detrás. Ahora la plaza vuelve a ser un espacio acorde con la morfología urbana de Benidorm. Se ha vuelto a liberar la mayor parte de la superficie para un espacio público peatonal, que, a la sombra de los reflejos del complejo, permite generar cualquier actividad sin esfuerzo. Quizá lo más importante sea que la escala del rascacielos no desmerezca, sino que se imponga en la ciudad como una apuesta aún mayor. Doble o nada.
