In the beginning, before the Christian era, three granite outcrops, Mont Saint Michel, the Rock of Tombelaine and Mont Doi constituted a sacred triangle. Mont Saint Michel grew with the spread of Christianity, becoming first a fortress and then a prison. All these transformations responded to the needs of each period. But insularity, mystery and presence are attributes which the Mont has preserved throughout.
However, its present-day image does nothing other than evoke the Middle Ages, an image of something which it no longer is. Our proposal is to continue its development.
View of Mont Saint Michel from the Herbus
View from the Herbus of Mont Saint Michel
From the herbus the Mont appears to be in the void. A rock replete with history emerges where nothing seems able to grow, where the tide wipes out all traces of humanity. To slip over this land with the constant presence of the Mont is for us the most surprising characteristic of the place, and this characteristic has become our project.
Acceptance of the car as an instrument for travel and understanding travel as cultural activity. Acceptance of the landscape as material we can manipulate. Acceptance of the bay as a place of leisure.
General layout

We have attempted to convert the trip by car on the herbus into a dream whose focal pint is the Mont. Our desire precedes the layout of the path. We penetrate the herbus rubbing against the Roque Tourin and we dream we are flying over the river, we slide over the grass, we plunge down towards the waves and we rise up once again to enjoy a new perspective. We propose to play with the view of Mont Saint Michel like a film director. The road over the herbus will be made from prefabricated concrete parts between which grass can grow. The raised road and the bridges will also be of concrete. A curvilinear bridge will lead us to the Mont at an angle on the rocky side, leaving the walls free. From the sentry round the road seems to pass by at our side, without stopping.

We believe that only the residents should be allowed to reach Mont Saint Michel by motor vehicle. At present some five thousand cars are concentrated around the Mont. Our intention, however, is not to conceal them but rather to control the sight of them. The parking areas for visitors will be always at the roadside, at the foot of small hillocks, artificial elevations from the herbus. In order to gain access to the car park we have to climb the hillock and then descend to find a place to leave the car. In order to reach the Mont we can choose between a promenade through the herbus, the pedestrian path, the bus or the river boats.
