The building on the corner of a small residential block in Berlin constitutes an attempt to create an architecture that grows ou of the existing situation, out of the specific nature of the site, the chance composition of the existing structure. This is an architecture for a very determinate place, in which what is already there and what is added, the old and the new, are interchangeable, blending with and commenting on each other. The exisitng old builind, a U-shaped block of houses, is completed by a construction of approximately the same size, also in the shape of a U. The two blocks together enclose a newly created court.
The theme of architecture has been defined in its spatial complexity and in the organization of its layout on the basis of the existing fragment. In this fragment is contained the principle of a surrounding wall in which the dwellings are set. This principle has been taken up in the new construction as the dominant theme. In the surrounding wall itself the potential themes of the wall have been varied. The range of these variations stretches from the ideal form thought its gradual transformation into openings in the wall and finally into individual buildings that are set independently in front of the wall.

The play of variations of the architectural form is resumed in the design of the facade. The neutral term of entrance, for example, is precisely stated as a door, entrance, portal; the general term of window is interpreted as a row of windows, a bay-window, a niche or a front of windows, the facade is divided up into base, middle part, and architrave. The principle of large scale repetition of the facade of the old building is contrasted by the shifted scale in the newly constructed part, almost creating an effect of optical illusion.

In this conception of architecture the old and the new have the same value. They should not be seen as antagonistic elements, but as elements that are mutually interdependent, conditioning each other like exhalation and inhalation. So the theme of assimilation leads to the reaffirmation of a living architecture in contrast to a way of building which is petrified in dogmas.
