I always write this Correo in the midst of extreme weather, but I can’t think of a better time to reflect on the transition between outer and inner space, your original prompt for this series. I am in New Haven, in the middle of a winter storm. It has been snowing all day, and now we are at -3 degrees Celsius, although this morning we reached -13 °C. You need to add an extra 10 degrees less to the each of these figures because of the wind chill. The atmosphere is gloomy, not only in terms of the weather, with the last week of sub-zero temperatures, twenty-four hours without seeing the sun, and non-stop snowfall, but also because of the political situation in the region and the country. The already weak democracy is disintegrating, being recorded on cell phones and broadcast on Twitter and Instagram: images that appear on a loop on social media, with patrols hunting down immigrants solely because of their skin color or accent, as well as executions in broad daylight, recorded by the protesters themselves. The cold weather is also psychological.
Siempre escribo este correo en medio de un fenómeno meteorológico extremo, pero no se me ocurre mejor ocasión para pensar en la transición entre el espacio exterior y el interior, tu mandado original para esta serie. Me encuentro en New Haven, en medio de una tormenta invernal. Lleva todo el día nevando y ahora nos encontramos a -3 grados centígrados, aunque esta mañana hemos llegado a -13 °C. Quítale diez grados más a la sensación térmica de cada uno de estos números. El ambiente está sombrío, no solo el atmosférico, con la última semana de temperaturas negativas, veinticuatro horas sin ver el sol y nevando sin parar, sino también el político de la región y del país. La ya débil democracia se desintegra, siendo grabada por teléfonos móviles y retransmitida en Twitter e Instagram: imágenes que aparecen en loop en las redes sociales, con patrullas parapoliciales a la caza del inmigrante, únicamente por su color de piel o acento, así como las ejecuciones a plena luz del día, grabadas por los mismos manifestantes. El frío ambiental también es psicológico.
The photo I’m sending you was taken today from my living room and using my latest gift: a thermal camera that shows how the faint heat from the heating system quickly dissipates through the thermal bridges of the facade. Used to the strong heating systems in New York, the apartments in New Haven are very cold. I do a little research on my building: built between 1959 and 1960, its facade must be double-layered brick, possibly with an air chamber in between, but no insulation. I always thought the building was elegant, especially after its renovation about a decade ago, which added the continuous railing and metal panels on its sides. It seems to have been designed by Robert Jacobs, who, as I understand it, was involved in the design of the Seagram Building and 425 Park Avenue, both in New York. If I ever sell it, I should put that in the listing. However, the architect’s status does not prevent it from being very cold in winter.

In the photo, you can see how the exterior wall and the terrace door are less than 10 degrees. Enric, however, likes to sleep on the sofa next to the window. I don´t really understand why. In the photo, he is the little white flurry circle at the bottom right. However, the cold, especially in the living room, also allows me to be more aware of external temperature changes. My body is covered with blankets on days like today, when the temperature is below zero, and I diligently put them away in a basket when they rise again.

El Correo is conceived as a playful act of exchanging ideas in writing, a random attempt to establish a dialogue at a distance, reflecting shared interests in the relationship between travel and architecture. Like any game, it is governed by a series of basic rules that determine the margins of its action. Four rules are fixed, while the last one is temporary and will be modified every time a cycle of 7 postal exchanges is completed.
El Correo se plantea como un acto lúdico de intercambio de ideas por escrito, un intento azaroso de establecer un diálogo en la distancia, reflejando intereses compartidos sobre la relación entre viaje y arquitectura. Como todo juego, se rige por una serie de reglas básicas que determinan los márgenes de su acción. Cuatro reglas son fijas, mientras que la última es temporal y será modificada cada vez que se cumpla un ciclo de 7 intercambios postales.
- The postcard must make direct reference to an experience lived in the first person by the author of the postcard.
- Each postcard will be illustrated with a photograph taken by the author.
- The text should not exceed 500 words.
- Each postcard must respond to the previous one in a concrete way within 30 days, creating a kind of domino effect.
- The theme of the first series of 7 postcards will be the transition between outer and inner space.
