Sometimes a building can be almost pure roof, its passive elements so hidden within its shadow to be obscure. The shell alone is the space encloser. This is what happens in La Virgen Milagrosa. With so powerful structure, one hardly, sees its ornaments and effigies.

It is a remarkable building. Quite accidentally, it seems the expressionism of early German films, Gaudi’s naturalistic play of shapes and the cubist experiments of Picasso are echoed here.

The Structure is a combination of warped surfaces, all of them (except for the small side chapel) paraboloids with the usual thickness of 1 1/2 in. or less. Even the slender campanile is made from warped planes. The church committee wanted a traditional design (a short of Gothic) and did not suspect they might be getting something else until the forms were up. In fact, the plan is very unpretentious and the only innovation is the structure. It is as if Candela wanted to see how much could be done with concrete stretched to its limit. In this respect the church is truly Gothic and this is the closes analogy I can draw. A triangular Gothic with all its accent vertical.
